<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;">So we're back from a great two and a half weeks on the stunning </span>Pembrokeshire<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"> Coast in Wales. It was a lovely break in a whole load of ways that have nothing to do with sleep and relaxation. The three kids had a ball - with </span>Spidey<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"> and Yoda becoming expert crab fishermen, and Woodie learning to roll. The adult slaves that are their parents had a great time, managed a fair few beers and balked at the revelation that family days out in Ireland aren't bad value afterall.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #222222;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">In time for the holidays the amazing <a href="http://www.colorineswonderful.com/" target="_blank">Colorine's Wonderful</a> is running a blog link on wonders of holidaying with children. I'm not so sure that my thoughts reveal much about any 'wonders', but here's my contribution based on our weeks just gone. It's 50% rant, 50% recommendation.</span></span></div>

My all time favourite dessert of last year was the divine <a href="http://www.thebusymamas.blogspot.ie/2013/08/favourite-summer-desert-cheesecake.html" target="_blank">Cheesecake Mousse with Strawberries and Lemon Curd</a>. I was surprised at how easy it was to make lemon curd and that it could be stored in the fridge for two weeks. If it lasted that long. Which it didn't.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MPbCLmePDJk/U7wKlMecSwI/AAAAAAAAPpI/gfpWx24Smm4/s1600/IMG_5193.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MPbCLmePDJk/U7wKlMecSwI/AAAAAAAAPpI/gfpWx24Smm4/s1600/IMG_5193.JPG" height="320" width="240"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><i>Even a regular pummelling by the plastic digging crew can't kill this old reliable, it seems!</i></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
This year I swore I'd make great things happen in our small garden but I trudged into the Summer with the usual small assembly of plants that have survived my crappy gardening skills, and the kids best attempts at vegicide (or whatever the murder of your mother's plants is called). But rhubarb is nothing is not a hardy old bugger of a plant, so this year my usual crop has appeared. I'm ashamed to admit that in previous years I've picked it with gusto and then let it wilt and rot in the fridge before officially declaring it to be compostable. <br>
<br>
This year I went in search of a tasty new recipe and here it is - <b>Rhubarb Bars</b> made with rhubarb curd on shortbread. They have a really delicate flavour and taste way posher than they are!<br>
<div>

</div>
<span style="text-align: justify;">The 'joy' of being baby no. 3 is that your parents are highly unlikely to ever buy you anything new. Marketing, gender differentiation and the overall appearance of things is meaningless to third timers. We've been there, seen that, bought the t-shirt and are now in recycle mode.</span><br>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br>
And so amidst a lot of well worn, stained, half pink-half blue stuff there is a gleaming new piece of kit in Woodie's collection. Simple explanation: I've been given a very smart <b>Stokke Steps Chair</b> to review. It was free but now I have to earn my supper and tell you what I think of it...<br>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Andrea over at <a href="http://www.officemum.ie/" target="_blank">Office Mum</a> writes a great blog about parenting, the parent-family-life balance, prosecco, shoes and the sweetness / madness of having three young children. She's a great writer, frequently appearing on The Journal, EU Mom and most recently Scary Mommy, a great blogging buddy and always beautifully honest. More to the point she's hand-on mum who also holds down a day-job, and gets a great kick when real life mums spill the beans on how they make things work.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As part of her series of interviews she has asked me a few questions about the juggling of work, life, kids and all the rest, so head over and read her lovely blog and my twopence worth here: <a href="http://officemum.ie/office-mum-stories-helen-okeeffe/">http://officemum.ie/office-mum-stories-helen-okeeffe/</a>.</div>

I do like the sunshine. I really do. It's lovely not having to pack three layers of clothing per child before leaving the house. Nicer still that we can go wandering around every afternoon so the house is partially less trashed than normal. And it's also lovely that the kids are collapsed in little exhausted heaps by 8.30 every night.<br>
<br>
But... whole parts of my body denaturate at temperatures above 21 degrees. It's kinda sticky hot. And I'm a little grumpy. This is my pathetic justification for stepping in from the brilliantly lovely sunshine for long enough to write a list of my bugbears of Summer.</div>

As lovely as the idea of fresh herbs from the garden is, the reality of having them when you need them is slightly trickier.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
A very cool trick I sussed out a while ago is to make up batches of fresh oily herbs like thyme, rosemary, oregano, garlic etc. and store them in the freezer in either oil of butter, so you have them when you need them. These are really handy to use straight on the pan for saute potatoes, vegetables or meats. </div>

Last year a friend posted a lovely invite on Facebook to become involved in a Craft Swap where - at some point that year, you'd send something handmade to any friend who volunteered to do the same to one of their friends, and so on. I pushed my dates slightly into 2014 (usual excuses apply) but have at last gotten around to nearly finishing my treats for my three friends, and now to posting them.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One of my very good friends has just moved into a new super stylish house - and her freshly painted walls and immaculate carpets are to be envied! With five young kids between us we've missed our boozy catch ups in recent years and substituted them for tea, kids and play-dates! We're surviving this 'dry period' in life though and I knew that if ever there was a Kerry girl who'd appreciates a pretty hand made tea-related gift, it's her.</div>

<br>
From the time I was expecting my first baby, and ever since, I am frequently told how fast time flies and children grow. How one day you share your house with megalomaniac toddlers, and the next with moody teens. Nearly five years on, I can already see how true the cliche is. It's only when I look back at photos or sort through teeny tiny baby clothes that I remember the stages of their lives, and ours, that have gone by, and that won't be back.<br>

I really needed some auto-pilot knitting the last few weeks. Waiting for Woodie's last test results had me tired and narky - and not in the mood for counting. We're well engrossed in Sons of Anarchy so I really wanted something not too distracting lest I miss some very dodgy Irish accents or a murder or three. The husband suggested not knitting. Lucky for him no needles were within reach.</div>
<div dir="ltr">
<br></div>
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">
So I ditched my to-do list and let some easy knits for Yoda and some little friends hop to the top of the queue. Talk about running with it - I have now made (and actually finished) four toddler cardigans in two weeks. They were lovely super chunky knits that were easy and turned out lovely. The kind of thing you'd nearly rip back just to do them all over again. Or maybe not.<br>

Our first workshop takes place next <b>Wednesday, 28th May </b>and is a <b>Professional Finishing course</b>. It is aimed at knitters of an intermediate or advanced level who want to improve the quality of their finished items with better joins, seams and sewing. I previously wrote a <a href="http://thebusymamas.blogspot.ie/2013/01/theres-always-something-new-to-learn.html" target="_blank">review of the course</a> which I'd taken in Winnie's Wool Shop and found it to be practical and really helpful. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
The workshop takes 2 to 2.5 hours and costs €25 per person. This will include refreshments and excessive amounts of homemade cake! Places are limited to a maximum of 8 people so bookings are on a first-come-first-served basis. There is homework in advance of the class - namely you will need a few prepared squares to work on. Details will be provided on booking.</div>

To keep things moving I have posted a Newsletter including a detailed questionnaire about knitting and workshops I am hoping to start this Autumn.<br>
<br>
The big thing about our group is that it is voluntary and non-commercial. The atmosphere is really relaxed and friendly. Knitters and crocheters of any (and no) skill level are welcome, and an appetite for cake is essential!<br>
<br>
Any interested crafters or wanna-be-crafters, have a read and feel free to come along to our next meet up on Wednesday 14th May at St. Joseph's Primary School in Fairview. You can contact me with any feedback or questions at northsideknittingandcrochet@gmail.com<br>
<br>
The newsletter and questionnaire is attached as an image file, after the break....<br>

<a href="http://www.bumblesofrice.com/" target="_blank">Bumbles of Rice</a> is running a lovely blog linky to look at what real families are eating for dinners - and not what makes it to Instagram, Facebook or Pinterest. </div>

A little like our dinners this week, my contribution is slightly slap-dash but very honest and (hopefully) not too disgusting! It's also painfully short of photos so apologies in advance.</div>

When I signed up to 'three kids under 5' package I had clearly been drinking and didn't read the small print. I hazily remember the paragraph on sleeplessness, the fights, the terminally wobbly belly etc. I swear I never noticed the bit about them all being sick at the same time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yoda's <a href="http://www.thebusymamas.blogspot.ie/2014/04/review-paediatric-first-aid-course-at.html" target="_blank">febrile convulsion last week</a> heralded the start of her hellish dose of Pox. The innocent first spot was actually a scout for hundreds of angry spots that were looking for their next victim. And they found it all over, and inside, poor Yoda's little body. She was truly dosed with them and had an understandably bad temper to boot. By 1.30am on Friday morning parenting styles diverged. Her father was actually suggesting some form of abandonment, while I was on the phone to D-Doc investigating the real likelihood of sedation - for her or me. I was also regretting teaching her the anatomically correct terms for her front bum. The phrase '<i>Oww, oww my sore bagina</i>' will ring in my ears for some time. I probably speaks to the extent of cut backs that a Social Worker hasn't been around by now.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Et2vKMzREDY/U1Zqh0y4_qI/AAAAAAAAMU0/e1-rUlBlZN0/s1600/first+aid+sign.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Et2vKMzREDY/U1Zqh0y4_qI/AAAAAAAAMU0/e1-rUlBlZN0/s1600/first+aid+sign.png" height="200" width="200"></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Like every parent I'm a fire fighter. I mean that in the most boring, not-at-all-exciting kind of way. I do things as and when they are most urgent. Things left undone stay on the back burner 'til they become the screamers that demand attention. So it is that I eventually do most of the things I mean to, or at least the ones that matter. Eventually.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I had thought about doing a first aid course when Spiderman was a baby. I looked into a few options but found they were too expensive during an unpaid year off work and also difficult to manage with a breastfed baby as most were day-long events. The arrival of Yoda didn't exactly free up much spare time and, bar one trip to Temple Street for a steri-stripped eye for Spidey, I'd gotten cocky and the notion of doing a course had completely slipped my mind.</div>

For anyone in Dublin this weekend I'd highly recommend you get yourself St Anne's Park in Raheny for the Battle of Clontarf millennium festivities.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We popped up today to get a sneaky peak of the set up. With two days to go until the battle re-enactments, the set-up is unbelievable and the atmosphere is great. Already the park is filled with tents, props and armies. There's an entire camp full of freezing Vikings staying there and running displays of crafts, fighting and just camp life. On Saturday and Sunday the main events will be re-enactments of the Battle as well as more stalls and fairgrounds. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This has the makings of a lovely family day out so fair play to all involved and fingers crossed for sunshine. Check out www.clontarf.ie for information - and if, like me, you need to brush up on a little of the history behind this whole thing all the information is right there.<br>
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ahead of our trip to the park, I made a nice batch of Hot Cross Buns. Handily you can mix these in the morning, leave them to rise and pop in the oven late morning. They're also yum toasted the next day - if they survive, fabulous with a cuppa tea and a million times nicer than the shop bought ones.</div>

Ah, how the last five years have taken my idea of 'how it is going to be', delivered a massive reality check (i.e.
kick up the arse) and left me laughing at the beautiful naivety of my childless
self.<o:p></o:p></div>

As the arrival of little Woodie approached, I abandoned a stack of nearly finished projects to fast-track some newborn cardigans and a new cover for the breastfeeding pillow. Just this week I, at last, got a few hours to finish, block and wear this new scarf which is all for me!<br>

We've five more days of creche and then roll on 9 months of mummy time. Dear jesus. Time to re-set my 24 hour feeding frenzy clock and get a week of normal rising under my belt before regime-change kicks in. Its all very 'wise' and that but in reality I'll be a heap of exhaustion in 6 days time kicking myself for not staying in bed while I could!<br>
<br>
It was an opportune time for a chat over cornflakes. I've been rummaging around the blog and noticing the things I said I'd overhaul months ago but never did, one of which was to give 'proper' pseudonyms to the kiddos. <br>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
So I ask them what do they want to be called. After about five minutes of them telling me their real names, middle ones, address and phone numbers - and without a long drawn-out conversation about the loveliness of anonymity on the web, here's what they came up with.<br>

A crowd. A loud and (hopefully) happy mob.<br>
<br>
My newest little boy arrived bang on his due date amidst some drama. A natural acrobat he spent the last few weeks of my pregnancy flipping every which way but down. Eventually he decided enough was enough and, just in time, he saved me a c-section and flew out in record breaking time. That said the wee fella then had some problems and broke his mama's heart by spending nine long days away from me in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.<br>

Like all new Mamas I've had my share of those dreaded moments when you realise your new baby is at last asleep snuggled in your arms (aka within sniffing distance of the boob), but that you are trapped at least three feet away from the bottle of water / remote control / phone, that you desperately need. And your husband isn't even around to hear you hissing a 'silent' roar!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7IelTcB7Hi4/Ut0L19bJhQI/AAAAAAAAJ6c/b3k2tmGbqgE/s1600/Sleeping+Baby+ecard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7IelTcB7Hi4/Ut0L19bJhQI/AAAAAAAAJ6c/b3k2tmGbqgE/s1600/Sleeping+Baby+ecard.jpg" height="280" width="400"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: xx-small;">Source: www.someecards.com</span></i></div>
<br>
So as it's not long to go before I become that rather comfie prisoner of a new, snuggly feeding baby I'm being very organised and trying to make some sense out of the chaos that is my online world and (in theory) set me up for some reading on the phone and tablet during those afternoons on the couch <i>Note: the reality of having three kids under 5 at home from about three weeks after my due date is waaay more likely to be the real impediment to my enjoyment of anything really! Judge me not. Hormones are talking. It's possible I'm quite delusional. Let me off please.</i><br>
<br>
Anyway, I've taken the hatchet to my ridiculously massive web accounts in a vague attempt to make sure I see the stuff I want to see, which all too often I seem to miss these days dealing with the main ones I like: Pinterest, Bloglovin and Ravelry. And while I'm at it I added some well overdue info for my Marino / Fairview Crafting ladies on two of the sites I've been barking on about for ages but keep forgetting to give them the low down on.<br>
